Ullrich Shoe Repair, located on Liberty Avenue, is your one stop shoe repair store. Rex Streno, who has been the owner since 2003, said the company has a long history dating back to his wife’s great-great grandfather, Bruno Seraini of Calabria, Italy, in the early 1940s.

Bruno Seraini, who was the head shoemaker of the town, earned the title of “Master” due to his work and position. Anthony Putaro, an apprentice, married Bruno’s daughter and continued his career in shoe repair. After immigrating to the United States, Putaro opened his first shoe repair shop in Brentwood. Soon, Putaro’s son Frank followed in his father’s footsteps to learn the family business.

Frank opened his own shop in Caste Village in Whitehall where he would stay until 1964 when he moved to 508 Liberty Avenue in Downtown. Frank bought the new shop from John Ullrich and decided to keep the name. In the 1980s Rex Streno married Frank’s daughter and soon joined in on the family business. In January 2008, the store relocated to Liberty Avenue for the last time.

With such a long history, Ullrich Shoe Repair offers nothing but the best service to its clients. The company repairs zippers, heels, soles, purses and can provide any other adjustments and alterations needed. Ullrich’s provides a shoe shine stand where customers can get their shoes shined after a long day of work.

In addition to shoe repairs, the shop makes keys, sells shoe accessories, purses and Steelers apparel. With so many services available and the variety of products, Ullrich’s prides itself with how quickly their services are. The store offers the “while you wait” policy where Streno can replace heels on a shoe in a matter of three minutes. When actors and musicians come to Pittsburgh for movies, shows or concerts, they go to Ullrich’s for repairs and adjustments, a credit to Streno’s strong reputation.
